Basics of the RC4 Button/LED User Interface (DMXio)

I. RC4 Series 3 Harmonized Design functionality explained on a DMXio

A.  On the side of the unit, buttons are behind slotted holes

B. On the side of the unit, LED indicators are behind round holes

II. LED indicators serve similar functions on all devices

A. There is some variation in how indicators work for each different RF system (RC4Magic, RC4Magic-900, LumenDim, and W-DIM)

B. The most significant differences involve the blue RF indicator

1. It is very important to know which system is in use and understand the meanings of the RF indicator states for that system

2. On RC4Magic Series 2 and Series 3 devices:

a. The blue RFcon indicator is solidly on to indicate the radio circuitry is powered but not connected to a wireless network.

b. The RFcon indicator will be blinking when the device has found an associated transmitter and has joined a wireless network

3. On LumenDim (CRMX) and W-DIM (W-DMX) devices:

a. The blue RF indicator is solidly on when the device is paired with an active transmitter

b. The RF indicator is off when the device is not paired to a transmitter

c. The RF indicator will be blinking if either (1) it is paired to a transmitter that is not present or is not within range, or (2) the Link button (sometimes called Connect or Pair) has been pressed on the transmitter

C. Other differences involve the left-most yellow data indicator

1. On RC4Magic devices, the yellow LED is marked RFdata and blinks or flutters when wireless data packets are received.  If no wireless data is being received and DMX data is present at the miniplug wired DMX data port, the yellow LED will be solidly on.

2. On LumenDim (CRMX) and W-DIM (W-DMX) devices, the yellow indicator is marked DMX Data and is on when valid DMX data is present either wirelessly or via the miniplug wired DMX data port.

II. Button functions are applicable on all RC4 Series 3 devices

A. Pushing a button while applying power will invoke a “power-up function”

1. Hold the button down, and apply power, then release the button

B. Buttons can be pushed when the unit is already powered up

1. This is called running mode

2. In this mode, buttons pushed by themselves invoke particular features of the device

C.  The shift keyShift keyThe shift key (or the shift button) is also called the Function or Func button.  It works similarly to the shift key on a computer keyboard, allowing other buttons on a device to have secondary functions.

D. The long pressLong-pressButtons on RC4 Series 3 devices can invoke different features by operating the buttons in different ways.  One way is to press and hold a button for several seconds.  This is called a long-press. 1. There are a handful of long-hold functions on RC4Magic Series 3 devices

2. Example: holding the function button for three seconds puts the unit in dongle mode (not applicable to LumenDim or W-DIM devices)

E. The RC4 Harmonized Design user-interface function chart outlines all the different options available for each system and device

1. There are some differences between 3-button and 5-button devices and devices that are members of different system families (RC4Magic, LumenDim, or W-DIM).
